Monitoring system for reinforced concrete – Multifunctional corrosion and moisture monitoring system for reinforced concrete parts

pdf

Ref.-No. 4070

A variety of reinforced concrete factories are now affected by chloride-induced corrosion of the reinforcement. The volume increase of the corrosion products creates blast pressure, which leads to cracking and spalling of the concrete ceiling. Drying out is one repair measure. However, success is not generally given, so corrosion monitoring is to be undertaken so order to control the effectiveness of a measure.

Sensors, which are currently the standard technology and measure the component moisture, corrosion currents, and electrochemical potential of the reinforcement, are very expensive and initially provide incorrect measurements over a long period of time due to their installation (with damp mortar).

The invention enables the installation of sensors that can provide measurement data in real time immediately after installation. They consist of a conductive, filled plastic mass. This is applied directly into the component and acts as a sensor both for the corrosion activity of the reinforcement and for the measurement of the electrolytic concrete reinforcement. The sensor can be incorporated directly during the repair measure; the period from injection to complete functioning is a few minutes. The effectiveness of the repair measure can thus be monitored directly.

Commercial Opportunities

As the material costs are much lower compared to conventional built-in sensors, significantly more sensors can be applied. Entire sensor systems can thus be installed in buildings that are at particular risk of moisture both during construction and at a later time. Buildings at particular risk are those near to the coast as well as buildings within the transport infrastructure.

Competitive Advantages

  • Usable measuring data after a few minutes
  • Subsequent installation possible
  • Significant economic benefits in terms of material costs and installation
  • Corrosion activity of the reinforcement and electrolytic concrete reinforcement are measured at the same time
  • Simple installation
  • Greater sensor density possible
