sensDrill - Drill with integrated temperature and acoustic emission detection

The measurement of the acoustic emission generated in the process can give evidence of material transitions or errors in the material or the tool. The integration of temperature and acoustic emission measurement technology with simultaneous simple data transmission has not yet been solved satisfactorily. sensDrill offers the required measurements and a simple data transfer, whereby the handling of sensDrill does not differ from conventional drills. The temperature sensor is integrated in a channel inside the drill so that the temperature measurement is done directly at the tip of the drill. An electronic circuit is arranged concentrically around the shaft of the drill, with which, on the one hand, the acoustic recordings are made and, on the other hand, the measured data are transmitted by radio. At the same time, the electronics receive the energy necessary for measurement, data processing and data transmission from the rotation of the drill. The system thus operates completely autonomously. A receiver for the data can be installed next to the workstation so that sensDrill does not have any restrictions during work.

Commercial Application

sensDrill  can be used in a variety of applications. In conventional machining processes, such as are found in the metal processing industry, sensDrill can, for example, optimize the tool life or detect material transitions. sensDrill also has some advantages for use in medicine: Changes in the tissue or bone can be detected by the acoustic recordings and the temperature measurement directly at the drill head can prevent damage to the tissue due to overheating.

Status Quo

A German patent application was filed, international applications are still possible. The method has been experimentally verified. In the name of RWTH Aachen, we offer interested companies the opportunity to license and further develop the technology.
