x-PET - Uniaxially oriented high-modulus and high-strength PET and PBT

Therefore PET or PBT is crosslinked in the extruder with PA (phthalic anhydride) and TGDDM (tetraglycidyl-diaminodiphenylmethane) and then stretched from the melt.

Commercial Application

PET and PBT fibers are modern high-performance materials, which only obtain their good mechanical properties through targeted drawing from the melt. x-PET enables the production of thicker molded bodies by cross-linking the polymer by stretching it directly from the melt. So for the first time thicker, high-modulus and high-strength components can be produced as fibers (e.g. panels and profiles). The typical application is in the field of lightweight construction.

Status Quo

A European patent application for the invention has been filed. The components produced to date have a modulus of elasticity of over 14 GPa and a tensile strength of over 600 MPa.
On behalf of Technical University of Dortmund PROvendis offers companies licenses for the invention. Cooperation for further development is also conceivable.
