Herbivorous insects can cause significant damages in agriculture, resulting in reduced crop yields, quality and profit for most of the crops worldwide. These damages can be controlled by the application of insecticides. Owing to a considerable number of reasons people and policy call for a sustainable reduction of the use of chemical pesticides. An increasing demand for alternative or complementary crop protection strategies is obvious.

Scientists of the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld developed a novel spray formulation to use endophytes for plant protection against herbivorous insects. The formulation comprises a surfactant, a UV-protecting compound, a nutrient and spores of the endophyte. Due to its sophisticated formulation the germination, the penetration and the colonization of the plant by the fungus is optimized. It increases the viability of fungal submerged spores after UV-radiation and decreases the contact angle resulting in an enlargement of the wetted leaf area.

The application of a specific strain of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana on rapeseed plants resulted in the protection from insect pests by causing mycosis. Its high virulence (> 85% mortality) and high persistence makes the formulation an ideal candidate for a chemical-free crop protection. The spray formulation is also suitable for other strains like, for example, endophytic Metarhizium strains. The successful upscaling of the biomass made the potential plant protection measure economically attractive.

Commercial Opportunities

The present invention provides a novel compound which can be used for plant protection against insect pests in crops like e.g. corn, potato, tomato, cotton, rapeseed, soybean, beans, etc.
