Device for Breast Biopsy - Automated MRI - Guided Vacuum Mamma-Biopsy Device

Diagnostic methods often indicate the need for an immobilization of the mamma for the period of the examination, especially while carrying out MRI supported vacuum biopsy. For a qualitative assessment, the mamma will usually be compressed by parallel-oriented components under applied pressure inside the MRI. However the following biopsy itself will be performed outside which can lead to deviations between imaged and targeted tissue position due to transportation and patient movements.
In addition, used immobilization equipment is only able to obtain an inhomogeneous compression level over the tissue volume that can lead to a slipping movement of the lesion while inducing the needle. Necessary additional images and checks increase the patient load and the table time. Therefore, the invention provides an automated vacuum biopsy device that is able to support a cranio-caudal or medio-lateral performed biopsy process in the same local position as the underlaying image - inside the MRI´s-Isocenter. This is carried out by a specifically developed mamma support component (integrated into a full patient support) in combination with a flexible element that wraps around the mamma while compressing it at the same time. This breast immobilization device reduces the method- and equipment-induced grade of inhomogeneity of tissue compression by 62% as compared to conventional immobilization with parallel grid- or plate devices and regardless of mamma size and tissue density level.
A software that is connected to the MRI´s workstation automatically positions the vacuum biopsy needle system (that is connected to a guiding device) to the calculated coordinate of the lesion with an absolute precision in a low sub mm range. The insertion into the tissue is carried out manually but supported by the guiding device in two directions.

The system mainly focuses on MRI guided vacuum biopsy. The use of special sorted materials and shapes based on validated biomedical modeling leads to fully compatible usability for MRI, increases the quality of the diagnosis, drastically reduces the table time and the patients stress.The invention can generally be adapted to all kinds of examination where soft tissue has to be immobilized using compression.
Prototypes of the “easy to adapt” described devices in combination with the software have been tested and evaluated.
